Ramisco

Ramisco is a Portuguese red grape variety grown primarily in the Colares DOC region, near Sintra, where it is deeply rooted in the local identity. Few grape varieties are as closely tied to a specific terroir as Ramisco is to Colares. Planted on its own roots in the region’s characteristic sandy soils—less than a kilometer from the Atlantic coast and around 110 meters in altitude, it survived the 19th-century phylloxera crisis, as the pest cannot thrive in sand.

Ramisco is of great oenological interest due to its high natural acidity (often over 6 g/L), low alcohol content (around 11–12% ABV), and notable tannic structure. It has a late-growing cycle and ripens slowly; its medium-sized, thick-skinned berries are highly resistant to disease, an essential trait in this Atlantic climate, exposed to wind and humidity.

Wines made from Ramisco are very tannic and astringent in their youth, but they have exceptional aging potential, developing elegance and finesse over time, with the color evolving into brick-like hues. Aromatically, they feature black fruits, violet, occasional saline notes from the ocean’s proximity, as well as sour cherry and cedar resin. On the palate, they are defined by lively acidity, firm tannins, and great freshness, allowing them to age gracefully in both barrel and bottle.

Ramisco is thus a symbol of heroic viticulture and unique heritage, producing wines of strong character, perfect for pairing with roast meats, game, or mushroom-based dishes.
