Loureiro

Loureiro is a grape variety originating from the Lima Valley in northern Portugal, where it reaches its fullest expression. Now widely spread across the Vinho Verde region, it has only recently gained the status of a noble grape variety.

Highly fertile and productive, Loureiro produces long, moderately compact clusters with medium-sized berries that have a yellow-green skin. It is renowned for its crystalline floral aromas, dominated by laurel flower (hence its name), orange blossom, acacia, and linden, often complemented by notes of apple and peach in single-varietal wines. The acidity is generally well balanced, giving the wines freshness and liveliness.

Wines made from Loureiro are light, refreshing, low in alcohol, with intense aromatic expression and subtle minerality. They are characterized by flavors of citrus, green apple, sometimes tropical fruits, and a highly appreciated saline finish. Traditionally, Loureiro is often blended with other local varieties such as Trajadura, Arinto (Pedernã), or Alvarinho, but 100% Loureiro cuvées are increasingly sought after for their aromatic purity and freshness.

This grape adapts well to the Atlantic climate and fertile soils of the region, which explains its strong presence in Vinho Verde. Thanks to its vivacity, it pairs perfectly with seafood, grilled fish, salads, and Asian cuisine.

In summary, Loureiro is a cornerstone of northern Portugal’s white wines, prized for its bright floral aromas, freshness, lightness, and great versatility at the table.
