Gouveio
Gouveio, very present in the Douro region, is now widespread throughout mainland Portugal. Long mistakenly confused with Verdelho, this confusion has led to some ambiguity in naming.
It is a productive and fairly early-ripening grape variety, with moderate yields, sensitive to powdery mildew and late rains. Its clusters are medium-sized and compact, with small green-yellow berries. Naturally high in acidity, Gouveio produces fresh and lively wines, which explains its success in the southern parts of the country, particularly in the Alentejo.
Wines made from Gouveio show firm acidity, good alcohol levels, structure, and fresh, citrusy aromas with notes of peach and anise. They offer a good balance between acidity and sugar and age well in the bottle.
