Dão

Surrounded by mountains, the Dão region extends over poor granite soils. Its vineyards, scattered among the pine forests, cover altitudes ranging from 200 to 1,000 metres. The plots are small and sparse, protected from continental and maritime influences by the mountains.

The main white grape varieties are Bical, Cercial, Malvasia Fina, Rabo de Ovelha, Verdelho, and Encruzado. Among the reds, there are Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen, Tinta Roriz, as well as Baga, Bastardo, and Tinta Pinheira, which are less valued.

Lafões is a small transitional region between the Dão and Vinho Verde, traversed by the Vouga and dominated by granite soils. The main white grape varieties are Arinto, Cerceal, Dona Branca, Esgana Cão, and Rabo de Ovelha, while the reds are dominated by Amaral and Jaen. The wines of Lafões are generally acidic, similar to those of the neighbouring Vinho Verde.
