Castelão
Castelão is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in southern Portugal, particularly popular in the wine regions of Tejo, Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula, and Alentejo. It is in Palmela, on the warm sands of Poceirão and among the region’s old vines that this grape truly reaches its full potential, thriving best in hot climates and on dry, sandy soils.
In well-managed, low-yield mature vineyards, Castelão produces structured and fruity wines, dominated by notes of redcurrant, stewed plum, and wild berries, along with typical hints of gamey, aged meat. These wines feature pronounced tannins and intense acidity, often revealing a rustic character that Castelão rarely sheds. The best examples offer excellent aging potential.
Castelão is also known as "Periquita" in the Setúbal region, where it holds a central place in the local wine identity.
