Baga
Baga, though capricious, is responsible for the finest wines of the Bairrada region and also plays an important role in the Beiras and Dão, while being less prominent in Lisbon and the Tejo.
It is a vigorous grape variety with small, late-ripening berries, requiring green harvesting and careful management to ensure optimal fruit quality and ripeness. Extremely sensitive to rot, Baga often suffers from the early September rains and thrives best in well-exposed clay soils. .
When full ripeness is achieved—especially in dry years—Baga wines stand out for their deep color, well-defined aromas of red and black fruits (wild berries, black plum), firm tannins, and lively acidity, with notes of coffee, dried herbs, tobacco, and smoke. .
Baga is renowned for its exceptional aging potential in the bottle, developing complexity and elegance over time.
