Antão Vaz

Antão Vaz is one of the most valued grape varieties of the Alentejo region, long almost exclusive to the Vidigueira area. It is a widely appreciated, rustic grape perfectly suited to the warm, sunny climate of the vast Alentejo plains, known for its consistency and productivity, with predictable and even ripening.

It produces large, moderately compact clusters with big berries and thick skins. Generally, it yields structured, firm, and full-bodied wines. Pure Antão Vaz wines reveal exuberant aromas with notes of ripe tropical fruits, mandarin zest, and mineral hints, while being dense and well-structured on the palate. When harvested early, it offers vibrantly aromatic wines balanced by firm acidity; if left longer on the vine, it can reach a high alcohol level, making it a good candidate for barrel aging.

Antão Vaz is regularly blended with Roupeiro and Arinto, which bring refreshing acidity and contribute to the wine’s balance. It is highly appreciated for its resistance to drought and diseases, making it especially suitable for the southern Alentejo climate. Antão Vaz wines stand out for their lemony color, tropical and mineral aromas, fresh, ample, and harmonious mouthfeel, as well as excellent aging potential.

This grape has become the symbol of Alentejo white wine, combining tradition, innovation, and great versatility at the table, especially paired with white meats, grilled fish, seafood, and poultry.
